A No-Brainer
"Like many millions of Americans, I’m accustomed
to convenience. As much as I care about the planet, doing something
about (the environmental crisis) is not always my top priority.
So I look for green solutions that are so clearly in my enlightened
self-interest that they make going green a no-brainer."― Josh
Dorfman.

Green
Lunches?
by Sharon A. Singer
No, we’re not proposing doing a musical revival
of Dr. Seuss’, Green Eggs
and Ham. What we are doing is talking about what each
of us can do to by-pass a goodly amount of the litter that will
accumulate from, once again, sending the kids off to school.
And
why is that important, when I have school supplies and clothes
and lab fees, etc. to worry about, you may well ask?
The answer is, because you recognize that taking care of
our planet is an important part of taking care of
your kids.
We propose that you pass on the knowledge
by teaching your kids by example while you pack their lunches
each day. Just watch how quickly they’ll get it!
Some suggestions from a recent Greenopia.com
article include (but are not limited to) the following:
·
Pack stainless steel-steel utensils instead
of disposable plastics.
·
Use reusable drink containers instead
of disposable juice boxes, juice pouches, cans and plastic bottles.
·
Avoid using plastic wraps, plastic bags,
wax paper bags and aluminum foil ―opt for Tupperware instead.
·
Cut down on packaging waste by purchasing
foods in larger containers that you can recycle, rather than buying
individually packaged servings.
A word
of caution regarding plastic storage containers: All that glitters may not be gold. I have fallen for what seems to be a good deal
in a drugstore or dollar store, only to find, after taking these
bargains home, that they leak or the lids actually come off while
in transit. So invest in the good stuff right from the start.
I have
found many perfectly good castoff Tupperware containers in thrift
stores or, if you’re flush right now go to Tupperware.com
to see what’s new.
We
apologize for any inconvenience you may have
experienced during the past two months and hope you will
continue to visit us in the future. It
is a new day; and we’re
looking forward to making
a difference together!
